Today, I carried out my third class in which I explained the relative clauses. At the beginning, everything was developed according to what I had planned. I started with the warm up which everybody enjoyed a lot; even the students didn’t want to stop playing. Then, I continued with the reading activity; next, I developed an activity in which the learners had to find his/her respective partner to carry out the exercise; nevertheless, I got in trouble with this activity because some students have had some problems among them. Therefore, some of them didn’t want to work together and I had to modify the activity to continue with it.
This situation was really uncomfortable because I didn’t know how to manage the circumstances at the beginning. It’s quite difficult finding students that don’t like each other and cannot work together for different issues; especially with students from advanced II level who are supposed to be a little bit more mature and behave like adults. Nonetheless, I could handle it and I was able to continue with my class.
The situation you faced is quite difficult as you said because those are things that we can not know beforehand and we as teachers need to vary the activities in class by doing pair work, group work, etc, so there are moments in which those students have to work together; but how will they react, that´s the problem.. congrats as you could handled the situation.. you gotta give us the tips you used so we can be ready for a situation like that one
